They most likely had a strong command of the Hebrew language and Hebrew Bible, as well as the Aramaic language which was the language of Israel, Syria, and the surrounding Fertile Crescent (called "Mesopotamia" in Greek ,"Bayth Nahrayn" in Aramaic), which was then Persia and Babylon the cradle of civilization and even The Garden of Eden. The Peshitta Old Testament most likely was translated from Hebrew manuscripts in Israel by Jews who had converted to Yeshua The Messiah in the 1st century and were familiar with the Semitic names of people and places in Israel at that time.
